The 60-Second Reset

A simple way to bring your nervous system back to coherence


Sometimes stress arrives suddenly — a difficult message, unexpected news, a busy moment in the kitchen, or simply too many things happening at once.


When this happens, the body can go into a quick “alert loop.”The mind races ahead, breathing becomes shallow, and we feel wired or unsettled.

The good news is that the body has natural ways to return to balance. One of the simplest is a 60-second reset.


Step 1 — Breathe (about 20 seconds)

Inhale slowly through the nose for 4 seconds Exhale gently for 6 seconds

Repeat this about five breaths.


Why it helps:A longer exhale signals the vagus nerve that the immediate alert response can soften. It tells the body: the moment of danger is passing.


Step 2 — Look Around (about 20 seconds)

Slowly move your eyes around the room or landscape.

Let your gaze land on three stable things — a tree, a chair, a window, a person.

Why it helps:Stress often pulls us into future thinking. Looking around your environment reminds the brain that you are here, in the present moment, and safe enough to settle.

Step 3 — Feel Your Feet (about 20 seconds)

Gently press your feet into the floor or ground.Notice the weight of your body being supported.

You can also lightly roll your shoulders back and soften your jaw.

Why it helps:This reconnects the brain with the body’s posture and fascia network. It helps move tension out of the head and back into grounded physical awareness.

In just one minute you have:

• slowed the breath• oriented your senses• grounded your body

These three systems together help the nervous system close the stress loop and return toward coherence.

When to use the 60-second reset

This works well when you feel:

• suddenly overwhelmed• emotionally reactive• mentally scattered• physically tense• wired before sleep• triggered by news or stressful conversations

It is also wonderful as a transition ritual between activities.

A simple phrase to remember

Breathe — Look — Feel — Soften

One minute.Your body remembers how to settle.
